Let's set the scene. You've been working on a mix for three days. Your studio monitors are dialed in, your headphone reference is locked, and everything sounds exactly the way you want it. You upload it to SoundCloud, send it out, and the feedback is great. Then you play it at a venue through a proper club system and it sounds like a completely different recording — muddy low end, harsh highs, no depth.

Or flip it. You build something raw and powerful specifically for a sound system, drop it in a set, the room goes off — and then someone asks for the link and tells you it sounds thin and weird through their AirPods.

This isn't a skill problem. It's a physics problem. And it's one that's quietly driving producers and DJs in the US absolutely crazy in 2025.

Two Listening Environments, Two Completely Different Worlds

The core issue is that earbuds and club speakers don't just sound different — they operate on fundamentally different acoustic principles.

Consumer earbuds, including the high-end ones, deliver sound directly into the ear canal. There's no room acoustics, no air between the driver and your eardrum, and no physical bass pressure. What you hear is an intimate, detailed, often hyped representation of the audio — boosted highs for clarity, enhanced mid-bass for warmth, and a compressed stereo image because there's literally no physical separation between your left and right ear.

A club system does the opposite of all of that. Sound has to travel across a room, interact with walls, floors, bodies, and air before it reaches your ears. The stereo field collapses at distance. Sub-bass frequencies below 60Hz become physical sensations rather than heard tones. Midrange frequencies — the ones that carry clarity and presence in earbud listening — often get swallowed by room noise and crowd energy.

Building a mix that thrives in both environments simultaneously is, to put it gently, a genuinely difficult challenge.

The Streaming Platform Factor

Make this more complicated: streaming platforms have their own loudness normalization standards that actively alter your audio before it reaches the listener.

Spotify normalizes to -14 LUFS. Apple Music sits around -16 LUFS. These platforms are essentially turning your mix down (or up) to match their target, which means a track mastered hot for perceived loudness on earbuds might get turned down so aggressively that its carefully crafted punch disappears entirely.

Producer and mixing engineer Jordan Taft, who splits his time between releasing originals on streaming platforms and providing tracks for DJ pools in the Midwest, describes the frustration directly: "I used to master everything loud because that's what people expected on streaming. Then I started getting feedback from DJs that my tracks didn't hit right in a club context — they were fighting the system's gain staging, and the low end was getting weird. I had to basically learn to master twice."

That dual-mastering approach — creating a streaming version and a club version of the same track — is becoming increasingly common among serious producers. It's more work, but it's the honest solution to a problem that doesn't have a clean single answer.

Why Bass Is the Biggest Battlefield

Low end is where the earbud-vs-speaker divide gets most brutal, and it's where mixing decisions that seem fine in one context completely fall apart in another.

Sub-bass frequencies — the stuff sitting between 20Hz and 60Hz — are essentially inaudible through most consumer earbuds and laptop speakers. They're felt in a club, not heard. So a producer who monitors exclusively on headphones might leave the sub completely unchecked, not realizing it's there until a club system reproduces it and the kick drum turns into an incoherent rumble.

The opposite problem is equally common. A mix built for a club system with a carefully sculpted sub might sound thin and bass-light through earbuds, because the sub frequencies that make the room shake simply don't register on small drivers.

Atlanta-based DJ and producer Simone Wray describes her solution: "I reference everything on three different systems — my studio monitors, a pair of consumer-grade Bluetooth speakers, and my phone speaker. If the low end reads on all three, even differently, I know I've made something that has a chance in multiple contexts. If it only sounds right on one, I've got work to do."

This kind of multi-reference monitoring workflow has become standard practice among producers who take the streaming-to-stage pipeline seriously.

Practical Fixes for the Dual-Platform Problem

There's no silver bullet here, but there are real strategies that help close the gap.

Frequency referencing matters more than ever. Using a spectrum analyzer alongside your ears gives you objective data about where your energy is sitting. A mix that looks balanced on an analyzer has a better chance of translating across playback systems than one built purely by feel.

Mid-side processing can help. Keeping your low end mono — which is standard practice in mastering — ensures your bass translates on systems that collapse the stereo field, while allowing your mids and highs to maintain stereo width for headphone listeners.

Loudness targeting for streaming should be intentional, not reactive. Mastering to around -14 LUFS for streaming and maintaining a separate, louder master for DJ use gives you control over how normalization affects your work rather than leaving it to the platform's algorithm.

Test your mixes in actual environments. This sounds obvious, but a lot of producers never hear their work through a real sound system before it's released. If you can get access to a venue during off-hours, or even a portable PA, that real-world test is worth more than any amount of studio referencing.

The Bigger Picture

This gap between headphone culture and club culture isn't going to close on its own. If anything, the rise of hi-res streaming and increasingly sophisticated consumer audio gear is raising listener expectations on the earbud side, while club systems continue to push toward more powerful, more nuanced sound reproduction.

The producers and DJs who figure out how to serve both audiences without compromising either one are going to have a serious advantage. But the first step is acknowledging that these are genuinely different problems requiring different solutions — not the same problem you can solve once and forget about.

Your mix doesn't sound like a lie. It just has two different truths depending on where you play it. The job is learning to tell both at the same time.
